Why does an inclusive workplace matter?

We’ve spoken a lot about the benefits of building diverse company cultures, but this month we’ve taken the conversation further through a closer analysis of all the moving parts that make up ensuring respectful team dynamics. We’ll be talking about how to do that in our following blogs, in this one we want to share why a company should. Let’s start off with defining what inclusivity in a workplace means.

What is inclusivity?

The given explanation of inclusivity (via Oxford Languages) is the practice of providing equal access to opportunities and resources to those within a marginalized group. Examples of these individuals would be disabled people, people of color, LGBTQIA+, and women.

Providing access may be happen inherently within a company culture, however, it is most likely the case that policies need to be set up in order to ensure that it is done.

What’s in it for the company?

Simply put, everything. We’re not joking, inclusivity within a workplace is a priceless thing. It ensures that employees are not only being treated fairly but also has the additional benefit of returning higher productivity and innovation.

Here’s a few of the advantages:

  1. Sense of belonging in employees. This is important because it gives employees a real attachment to the company’s mission. They feel valued, therefore they’re more inclined to be proactive in objectives.
  2. Collaboration within team increases. And you know what that means? More innovative ideas and results that stand out in the industry.
  3. A diversity-driven dynamic company culture. Which means a higher retention rate and a greater chance at attracting skilled talent to your teams. Just think of the possibilities when your business is NOT bogged down by the turnover process?

We’re guessing all this sounds appealing and that you’re interested in establishing some inclusive practices into your company structures? Stay tuned in the weeks to come as we acknowledge the month of Pride by providing strategies to do just that.
